St. Augustine Alligator FarmThe St. Augustine Alligator Farm is the only zoological park in the world with a collection of all 23 species of living crocodilians.
In terms of the largest number of specimens there are dozens of American alligators, of all sizes, from babies to huge adults. But
the biggest reptile of them all is Maximo. At over 15 feet
in length
and the
weight of 1250 pounds, Maximo, a
saltwater crocodile from
Australia, is the largest crocodillian in the park.
The wading bird rookery is the native swamp exhibit where hundreds of wading birds fly in to roost in the late afternoons. Herons, egrets, ibis, spoonbills, and wood storks can be seen in their natural environment.
There are also exotic birds and mammals on display, like South American toucans and parrots, Australian kookaburras and emus, Asian pheasants, and African turacos. The mammal collection includes seven different species of endangered monkeys. They range in size from the world's smallest monkey, the mouse-sized Pygmy Marmoset, to the large South American Spider Monkey that swings across the branches of its exhibit. |
