Fort Matanzas National Monument

The Fort Matanzas National Monument is a relatively small historical park. It offers free admission and a free ferry to the fort of Rattlesnake Island. On your way to the island you will learn some interesting facts about the history of the fort from your boat captain.

Fort Matanzas National Monument - Ferry

While on the ferry you have a good chance to see dolphins. They are very playful and it is always fun to watch them jumping from the water.

Hiking is available via a boardwalk and nature trails that go through
a coastal maritime forest and sand dunes to a beach overlook.

Guided tours are available on the weekends.  At the Visitor Center you may pick up a brochure and trail guide.

There are a lot of birds you may expect here, including ospreys, bald eagles, brown pelicans, great blue herons to mention just a few.  On the beach you may see tracks of green sea turtles.

Fort Matanzas Nature Trail

Park is open year round except for Christmas, operating hours are 9:00 am through 5:30 pm daily. Peak times are March through Labor Day, and the Christmas season.
