Florida Keys IslandsThe Florida Keys consist of a trail of beautiful and
exotic islands
that start at the most southern line at the shores of Florida.
History of the Florida KeysIn the earliest days of history, the Indian tribe of Calusa discovered this tropical paradise. Once this tribe saw the potential in the area of fishing, and hunting, more and more individuals were attracted to the islands. Once the Spanish began to discover the upper parts of Florida, it was not long before they arrived in the Florida Keys. The ever-popular Ponce De Leon, who also had a hand in the establishment of the Nation’s Oldest City, St. Augustine, Florida, experienced the Keys for the first time in the middle of May 1513. When Ponce De Leon saw the set of islands he immediately designated a particular name for them. He referred to them as "Los Martires". In English, this means "The Martyrs". This is because he saw the island rocks from a distance off. In his mind’s eye, the rocks resembled that of men who were experiencing great suffering. We now know that this was long before he experienced the lavish beauty of these tropical islands up close and personal. Throughout the history of the Florida Keys, we have seen it as an area that has been affected by many unfortunate events. It has been invaded by greedy pirates, an assortment of wild outlaws, as well as entrepreneurs looking to cash in on the area and the treasures that the islands played host to. Florida Keys Weather
The spirit of the islands lived on, and the residents rebuilt this utopia for all of the world to enjoy! |
